Smokefree private vehicles

Closed 27 Aug 2014

Opened 15 Jul 2014

Overview

The Children and Families Act 2014 gave regulation making powers to the Secretary of State for Health to introduce legislation to end smoking in private vehicles carrying children.

The purpose of this consultation is to seek views on draft regulations for ending smoking in private vehicles carrying children before they are made. The draft regulations explain how the legislation would work in practice.

Alongside the consultation, we have also published a consultation-stage Impact Assessment and an Equality Analysis.

What Happens Next

All responses received by the closing date will be carefully considered.  A summary report of consultation responses will be published on the Department of Health website in due course after the completion of the consultation.

A final decision will be made on the content of the regulations.  Subject to Parliamentary approval, we anticipate the new offences would come into force in 2015. There will be discussions with Public Health England about optimum timing of education and behaviour change campaigns in relation to these new offences.
